Police probe reef dive death of 'beautiful young woman'

A Marion County jury Wednesday found three men guilty on three felony counts in the death of a 27-year-old woman who was strangled and suffocated in November 2013 while on her wedding day.

The jury also acquitted another man on two counts of aggravated murder after the case began with testimony by three different forensic experts.

"This was a tragic case with no clear winners," Marion County Prosecutor Steve Zink said before the jurors' verdict. "The jury gave us what we need to be able to move forward and make sense of what happened."

Sophomore Natalie Hirst was shot on her wedding day of June 4, 2013, around 9 p.m., by Michael Deleon DeCesar, 37, of Grosse Pointe, DeCesar and one of their guests, 18-year-old James H. DeCesar, of the Grosse Pointe Farms area.

Hirst was taken to the hospital where she remained for several days before doctors discovered a bloody nose on her face. Hirst suffered multiple injuries to her face and neck and died at the hospital.

DeCesar, DeCesar's partner and DeCesar's friend from Grosse Pointe, remains at large.

The State Attorney's Office has recommended death sentence for DeCesar. It's believed it was related to Hirst's death.

Hirst's relatives described her as a bubbly personality who loved animals and was always smiling.

Sophomore Kayla Schulz told jurors Thursday that she was nervous for DeCesar because she had been friends with him since middle school, and his actions during that time prompted her to believe he might be dangerous.

"They just couldn't find anyone who would do what he did," Schulz said.

The day before her wedding, Schulz said she saw DeCesar at her high school football game on June 4 and the next day, he was outside her high school bus on an outdoor prom. Hirst texted Schulz about the date with the prom date the following day, and Schulz followed along with DeCesar at the prom, she testified.

At 8:30 p.m. that evening, Schulz says, she got a text message from her high school's football player's cell phone saying, "I just shot someone today." She said she answered the text and was asked if she wanted to be the next victim.
